Mitski Miyawaki describes her eclectic cross-cultural identity as “half Japanese, half American but not fully either”, a feeling that is often reflected in her music, which occasionally discusses issues of belonging. She’s announced her new album Laurel Hell, which will be released February 4, 2022. She says it’s an album of love songs about real relationships that are not power struggles to be won or lost. Mitski is heading out on a sold out tour next year in support of the new album. Mitski’s last album Be the Cowboy, was listed by music critics as the best album of 2018.

To celebrate, the band has already shared the song “Crutch.” Ben Bridwell explains,” I think like a lot of my songs, ‘Crutch’ starts with something from my real life. Obviously ‘Crutch’ means some of the things that I was dependent on. My relationship for one. I thought it was funny how crushes also feel like crutches.”
